New Years Superstitions

Snopes.com, the Urban Legend Reference site, has a list of New Years Superstitions that are popular in the US and around the world. One such superstition apparently centers around work. To quote right from the site:

“Work: Make sure to do – and be successful at – something related to your work on the first day of the year, even if you don’t go near your place of employment that day. Limit your activity to a token amount, though, because to engage in a serious work project on that day is very unlucky.”

Nice idea, but some how I think my employers might take some issue with me bringing my work home with me, let alone engaging in even a “token” amount of it.

Yes sir, no “Toke”-ing for me this New Years.

On a related note the NYPD was nice enough to let us skip lunch and give us an hour so I got out 2 hours early today. On top of that no work for me tomorrow. W00T! Don’t quite yet know what I will do with my time off other then be lazy and enjoy it!

Post Christmas post

Well I am back in NY after spending Christmas in Hartford. Christmas was nice, I got a bunch of stuff for my apartment (new rug and a toaster oven) plus some fun stuff like Family Guy Season 1 on DVD and I/Nippy got a new little cave thing for her tank which she seems to like so far. I also got to go to the movies, went to see Lemony Snicket. I liked it, was really sort of dark but good none the less. But as nice as it was I am glad the holidays are over for the most part, well that and the fact that this week is a four day week for me. No work for me Friday, W00T! Benefits of working for the City and all that.

Anyway this post is like probably really boring so I think I will leave it at that. :)

It’s Christmas Day

“What’s to-day!” cried Scrooge, calling downward to a
boy in Sunday clothes, who perhaps had loitered in to look
about him.

“EH?” returned the boy, with all his might of wonder.

“What’s to-day, my fine fellow?” said Scrooge.

“To-day!” replied the boy. “Why, CHRISTMAS DAY.”

“It’s Christmas Day!” said Scrooge to himself. “I
haven’t missed it. The Spirits have done it all in one night.
They can do anything they like. Of course they can. Of
course they can. Hallo, my fine fellow!”

teh_girls visit…re-cap…

I guess I have recovered from the airport adventures of the last few days. All in all Megs visit was a lot of fun. I got to take her into the city, her first visit, and do all sorts of tourist things. You can check out her Journal for more details if you really want to know our full itinerary. Sure we had our share of minor issues, mostly dealing with dates and times of certain things, but we survived and had fun none the less. After missing her flight Tuesday we were able to get her on a god-awful early flight yesterday, so I was up from 3 and at work by 615 (when normally I don’t have to go in till ten.) But she made it home safe which is always a good thing. We are already planing for the next visit, which will hopefully be in March when shes on her spring break, and I come down to FL to see her.

I am quickly getting back into the swing of things at work. It was nice to be off for 6 days in a row through. It re-affirms my plan to take off more time every once and a while just for the hell of it. Did get a decent sized case today, which is turning out to be a bit of a pain in the ass, but nothing bad really. They let us go home 2 hours early today and we will get to leave at least an hour early tomorrow. So woo hoo for that I guess. I would still rather not be working tomorrow but nothing I can do about that now.

Anyway time to pack and clean up a bit round here. Going home to CT tomorrow for Christmas….ohhh its the Simpsons inside the Actors Studio on Bravo…I’ve always wanted to see this one….maybe packing will wait a tad.

Finally got Meg back home. Huge drama ensued with missed flights and other similar panic inducing things, and I will try and do a more detailed post tomorrow. Tonight I must sleep. Was up at 3 and in the lab by 6 (didn’t make sense to go home at that point). But it was worth it, and as usually a uber fun time with “teh girl” this time in the Big City.

Anyway sleep now, more journal later.

This will probably be my last post for about a week. Meg is arriving today from FL to spend a week here in the big city. Though what a day to get here from FL, its all of 22F this morning. Brrrrr! So anyway, might have quick update or two while shes here, that is if I can get her off my computer long enough to use it my self :)

So I get to work and wanted to DL something from my page here and got a nifty error message. It seems that in playing with my .htaccess file last night to try and block some sites from hitting my page I did too good a job and sort of blocked all of them. Oopse! But luckily it was easy to fix and everything is back to normal now.

Now to pimp a cool movie trailer I saw on the net today. It’s for “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” which is a movie that I long thought could/should never be re-made but with Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka this one could just be alright. Check out the trailer but not before bed, its kind of freaky.

Money

Back when I worked at the movie theatre I used to have access to large numbers of small denomination bills. We mostly saw ones and fives during the day, and at night when we got twenties we had to give out ones and fives in change. This worked out good for me because I am a bit of a currency collector, or at least am one to the point that someone with very little currency can be I guess. Anyway back in those days there was little to nothing to do between when the movies started and when they got out. We usually had a good hour and a half of down time before there was any real work to do again. In the summer I got A LOT of reading done. I would also rifle through the singles we got from the bank looking for any Where’s George bills or any other rare/cool bills I could buy out of the drawer. If I found any I would usually stick them between the pages of what ever book I was reading to keep them crisp and safe until I got home and could put them some where safer. Apparently I forgot a lot. In the last two days I have found three different bills between the pages of books I have been reading, two singles in my Vonnegut book and a super crisp two between pages of my Bukowski book. Sure I wish they had been 50′s or 100′s but still found money is found money and always a nice little surprise.

Speaking of money I spent way too much of it this weekend Christmas shopping. I went down to Union Square and hit some of the big stores as well as a few smaller places. It was crowded and a pain to get to because the stupid M train wasn’t running from where I live but I survived and managed to get most all my shopping done, so at least there is that I guess. One funny side note is that when I was getting ready to leave the Union Square area who do I run into but by boss from the Crime Lab, Scott and his GF. They were out shopping too. Figures that with 8,000,000 people in NY I would run into my boss, he probably thinks I am stalking him now or something.

More Log Fun

So taking a quick look at my logs this morning I noticed that someone hit my site by following a link in a message in a yahoo group. The odd/disturbing thing is that the group is apparently a “‘furz-in-space’ type of ADULT Role Play adventure- in an anthropomorphic alternate universe”.

Right……

I have no idea who or why I would be linked from there…and really…I don’t want to know. Some things on the Internets are best left a mystery I say.

What’s Wrong

I was heading home tonight and saw a warning message in the subway station that re-enforced my belief that a good number of people are….well…..stupid. The message read something like “keep your child’s stroller away from the closing doors”. As in people running to catch the subway use their child to stop the doors from closing. Yah….that’s about all you can say for what’s wrong with people today, both that they would do such a thing AND that they have to be told not to.
