Why haven’t I watched BBC America more often? This stuff isn’t half bad….and compared to 99% of US tv it’s down right great.

Apples…

Went for a walk this morning and checked out the little green market they have down at the future site of the “Atlas Shops” here in Glendale. They are doing the market till mid-november though there were only 3 or 4 vendors there right now. Still I got some good, fresh apples, and more importantly REAL Un-pasteurized apple cider. Mmmmm. Stuff was expensive but so worth it given how hard it is to find. Sure….it could kill you or something, but thats mostly just old people and little kids. Worst it could probably do to me is make me sick or something (which would get me out of a few days of work so….)

not much else on the agenda today, I ought to clean a little around here but we’ll see about that.

Heat…

Posted on October 28th, 2005 by Captain Science.

So it’s been a bit cold in my apartment last few days. The cause of this is that it’s cold outside (duh!) and that there was no heat. Now I normally like my apartment quite warm so just because I thought it was cold didn’t really mean it REALLY was cold. Well last night my new landlord called and said that the woman down stairs had called to say her place was cold and that she wanted to know what the heat situation was in my unit. I told here there was none! It seems in my building the heat is always on, even in the summer, it just doesn’t kick in because of the thermostat control. Well I guess something got messed up because it most definitely was not on this past week. Poor Nippy’s tank, even with the heat lamps, was barely in the 70’s most days, and for a cold blooded reptile that’s cold. Well to make a long story short, mostly because I am still at work right now and get to go home in 15 minutes, my landlord got someone, somehow, to come to my building last night and by 11:30 pm my apartment was nice and toasty. This morning Nippy even came out of her cave and was hanging around her tank enjoying the warmth (though she is grumpy right now because she is about to shed again).

So there is the pointless story about my cold apartment. And no…you can’t have the 2 minutes it took to read this back. They are mine now, and I am keeping them.

Body Identified as Missing Grad Student

October 26, 2005

The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office on Wednesday identified the body of a woman involved in a recent traffic accident as that of a UC Davis graduate student who had been missing for a week.

The coroner’s office confirmed that Beverly “Bev” Paul, a graduate student in agriculture and environmental chemistry, was killed in the early morning of October 19, after being struck by a truck tractor on I-5 northbound, north of J Street. The California Highway Patrol reported later that day that the victim died immediately at the scene.

Ms. Paul, 26 years old, was last seen at the Sierra Vista Hospital in Sacramento on the morning of Oct. 18. She was reported missing by a UC Davis faculty advisor and had not been seen by family or friends since then. Her vehicle was found the morning of Oct. 21 at the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento.

The UC Davis Police Department investigated Ms. Paul’s disappearance with the assistance of the CHP and the coroner’s office. The coroner’s office and the California Department of Justice used fingerprints to identify Ms. Paul’s body.

The CHP is continuing to investigate the Oct. 19 traffic accident. The CHP is requesting that anyone with information regarding the collision contact them at (916) 681-2300 or (916) 861-1300.

This is about one of my former co-workers here at the lab. She was was in my training class but left here a few months ago to go back to school in CA. So far we don’t have any more info than what we have read on the internet, but as you can imagine everyone here is just a little freaked out to say the least.

One star reviews

Lone Star Statements by Matthew Baldwin Time magazine 100 greatest book list as seen by “one star” reviews from amazon.com. One of my favorites is:

“Mrs. Dalloway (1925) Author: Virginia Woolf

“The only good thing to say about this “literary” drivel is that the person responsible, Virginia Woolf, has been dead for quite some time now. Let us pray to God she stays that way.”

It’s not the comment so much, as the idea of a re-animated Virginia Woolf Zombie stalking across the countryside in search of brains.

You life is in my hands…

…if you work between 4 and 6 at the police lab that is. It seems that I was made “searcher” for the 5 floor, between the hours of 4 and 6, in the event of a fire/drill. I had to go to a little fire safety training thing this morning when I got in so I could learn all about my job (which I only sort of did) and all about the fire safety plan and equipment we have at the lab. The meeting was alright, most of the stuff I knew already from my Lab Assisting training days. One thing that stuck me funny was when they were talking about the “clean” fire suppression system they have in the computer and chemical rooms we were told that “the chemical they use is mostly harmless, it’s like Freon sort of so it could give you a cold burn if you stood right next to the nozzle” while true in theory I suppose they sorta glossed over the fact that the stuff works by displacing the Oxygen in the room so, while true the chemical it self may not hurt you, I am pretty sure that the lack of Oxygen that results from it being released might.

It seems my job is to go through my assigned rooms (I get a nifty “searcher” hard hat to wear) and make sure that no one is still there (for whatever reasons). Reminds me of when I worked at the bookstore in the mall and how I had to check the store for people before we were aloud to leave, and how some would refuse to leave till my Mrg. At the time said “well I don’t care if you burn to death, but I’m not so get out!”. Good times…good times…

Now I wonder if I can abuse my title to make a little cash on the side in the form of protection money.

You know for the low-low price of only 5$ a month I can make sure that in the event of a fire I will “search extra hard for you!”, as opposed to say the 1$ a month “casual glance around the room”. Sure there is always the free option but that only consists of “a quick look through the door to see if you are under a burning beam or something” and maybe doing something about that after I check for all the paying customers.

Of course I couldn’t call it “protection money” for obvious reasons; rather it would be something like “Andrew’s personal fire safety monitoring service”.

One day isn’t enough

Had to work Saturday so had yet another one day weekend. Blah! Guess I got a lot done with just the one day but still. I like one day to relax and do stuff and one day to shop and run errands. Ah well. Um there was more stuff I was going to write but nothing of vital interest to share at the moment. Just work and the occasional run around at court as you read in the last post. We got our holiday overtime sheets Saturday and I filled it out, I’m hoping this year I don’t have to work Christmas Eve AGAIN but we shall see. (Speaking of one of the stores on Myrtle ave was putting up their Christmas Display today…..On October 16! WTF?!?)

Seven Minutes

Well today I had to go to court….and was there for all of 7 minutes. First had to go on one case and before I left they said for me to call a second ADA when I got out to see if she needed me. Well I change and head out, halfway there I get a message from work that said the first person didn’t need me but the second ADA still did. Well I finally get to court, punch in, and call the ADA only to find now SHE didn’t need me either. So I turn around, punch out after all of 7 minutes and with a strange look from the sign in room lady, and get back on the subway and head back to the lab. You don’t see that sort of adventure on Law and Order now do you? :)

You scored as Kaylee Frye. The Mechanic. You are a natural mechanic, and you are far too sweet and cheerful to live out here. How you can see the good in everyone around you boggles the mind occationally. Still you don’t seem to be any crazier than that, and it is a nice kinda crazy.

red alert or something like that

So yah we are all going to die on the subway or something like that. That didn’t stop me from going out this weekend, the rain did actually. I ran out and did a few small errands this morning but that was about it. Seeing as it poured all day today I mostly hid in my appt. Well ok, I did run out to the store because I had a hankering for something sweet so I picked up milk and eggs and brownie mix. Mmmm. Yah I was week but eh…I deserve it. Like a sucker I volunteered to work Monday (Columbus Day) I just have to remember that I have to be in at 8 instead of 10. I can so see my self forgetting and going in late. But what would I do with Columbus Day off? plus I get time and a half plus 7 hours of time. So its worth going in.

(I just called the girl and we are BOTH such geeks. It’s a saturday night and we BOTH have the history channel on watching an episode of their series “Hooked: Illegal Drugs”, its really more work study for me but still…..geeks the both of us) :)

ah well what can I say…I’m a geek, got a geek girl, and am proud damn it!

A normal person looks up a map on google and maybe prints it out or saves it to uses it for say a project. A geek signs up to get a google maps api code and puts his own custom large size map on his website so he can more easily paste together a large size map of the city. Guess which one I am?

back in NYC with another plant…

Posted on October 2nd, 2005 by Captain Science.
Categories: Personal.

Well I am back in NYC again after a weekend back in CT. Was a nice trip. As I said before I went to the book barn and got some books (duh!) and saw a few movies Friday. Saturday I ran some errands and did a little shopping (got a laptop bag and flash drive). Then Saturday night Val came up to visit and we went out to Macaroni Grill (well we wondered around the mall for an hour first waiting for our reservation time). Then today was just some grocery shopping (so I didn’t have to do it in NYC) and my parents drove me back here. Which was nice because with all the crap I bought dragging it home on the train would of sucked!

At Price Chopper in CT (where I went grocery shopping) they had a big display of Lucky Bamboo plants, both in pots and arrangements, and as loose stalks. So I bought one of the loose ones, which was only like 0.89c and potted it in a red 250ml erlenmeyer flask with some small stones I got form the dollar store. It looks nice, sorta “chemistry nerd” decor.
