no work today…

Took today off, Val and her sister have tickets to see Rent tonight in the city but are coming in early so we can hang out for a bit. Nice to have today off after the pain in the ass yesterday was.

Had to go to Brooklyn family court to testify on a case but because they called late Friday I had no paper work. They didn’t need be till 9:30 but to get the copies I needed as well as my suit I stopped by the lab on my own time to get the stuff I needed then was going to head to the court for 9:30 am (where I would sign in and get paid a half hour of over time since my shift starts at 10 normally). While still at the lab the ADA called and said they weren’t ready yet and to wait there so I did. Then round 9 he calls back and says to head out there as soon as I can. So I do, get there at 10 and sign in. Ended up sitting there for 1.5 hours but didn’t have to testify and got to go back to the lab. So I get back and find out that because I signed in at the court at 10, my normal start time, I wouldn’t be getting paid any OT. Which is lame if you ask me. I would of been there for 9:30 am if they hadn’t told me not to leave yet, so really because they told me to wait now I don’t get paid for the extra time. Nice eh? So needless to say I was a tad miffed about that, but seeing as it’s only 30 min. or so of OT it’s probably not worth making much of an issue out of. Still…blah!

Did make good use of my day off though, was able to run out to the post office and mail out the rest of Meg’s presents as well a running a few other errands.

Tomorrow it’s back to work, but after Monday and Today off it will make for a short week even if I have to work New Years Eve (which I really don’t mind doing seeing as I didn’t really have any plans for it anyway.

Yay Christmas…

Well the whole Christmas season went way too fast this year! Even so I managed to get all my shopping done, and some time next week I will mail out the last of said presents (Sorry Meg, though you got one thing already). Christmas here in Hartford was good. Got a bunch of gifts (Electric Razor, Simpsons Trivia Calendar, Star Wars Epi. 3 DVD, Socks, Itunes and Bookstore gift cards, plus a few other odds and ends. All in all very nice. We had Christmas Dinner early, Grandma Oprysko came (my dad had to take her to chuch this morning), there was Ham and pie. Need I say more?

Wasn’t all good though, I went to see the remake of “The Producers” tonight. Um…well…I am glad it was free. You are really better off just renting the original movie. Yah, this one is more a musical version based on the Broadway play but that I just didn’t think it was very good. The music didn’t add anything to it, and I really didn’t think that Matthew Broderick was that good an actor in this. It was like he was trying too hard to play Gene Wilder from the original but just couldn’t quite get the part right. Ah well, I am sure there are plenty of people who loved it….Just saying that I am glad I got in for free is all.

Anyway, tomorrow it’s back to NYC and then back to work Tuesday (well sort of, I have to go to court again…whee!)

Blood for oil?

So you know the popular anti-Iraq war slogan that has been going around the last few years “No Blood for Oil”? Well here at work we are having a blood drive tomorrow and there are posters up in the hallway, next to the elevators, that advertise that anyone who donates a pint of blood tomorrow will receive a free Exon Mobil gift card, good for something like 5$ worth of gas.

Just funny in a sick sort of way is all I guess…

Stupid TWU…

Stupid Transit Workers Union….not to say the MTA is totally blameless but right now seems like it’s the TWU thats being more than just a bit unreasonable. Call me bitter but I hope the city PILES on the fines!

Also most strikes rely on public support to help them get what they are striking for. Hate to break it to them but I don’t really see the TWU getting much if any support from the public in this case. Maybe there would of been a chance any other time of the year but the week before Christmas? Um….no. Normally I am all about supporting unions when they strike….but only when there is a valid reason for it.

PS. I hope santa leaves both sides Coal in their stockings!

Subway Slow Down…

My trip home took an extra 15 minutes or so tonight. On the eve of a possible strike I am convinced that the J Train was just a bit slower tonight then usual, which I am sure was intentional. Now we just wait and see what happens tonight, hopefully the city will wise up and give in to the union. I wouldn’t think they would be stupid enough to push them into a strike but I have been wrong about the city before. I should know…I work for them.

I took today off and went into the city to do my christmas shopping. It was cold but nice. Got most all my shopping done, just a few things for a few people still to go. While I was there I also went to see The Chronicles of Narnia. It was really good, pretty close to the book from what I remember, though its been many years since I read it. After the movie I did a little more shopping, including getting my self a little present….a new hat:

Good Gods…

Final episode of this season of survivor is on right now. For those wiser then I who don’t watch it their camp is among Mayan Temple ruins. Bad idea to begin with, setting a game show among Mayan ruins and all. Anyway as part of this final episode they were treated to having some locals come to their camp and watch them perform a Mayan ritual in front of the temple, complete with they sacrifice of a chicken for the Gods. The chicken had its head removed and put on a fire and burned as an offering. Well a few hours later there is still a charred chicken on the remains of the sacrificial fire and one of the rocket scientist survivors (Stephanie) wants to go see if there is anything left that they can eat! So they do and find that it’s charred on the outside but cooked on the inside. So what do they do? BRING IT BACK TO EAT! The chicken that was offered up to the Gods (and Gods that likely don’t like the white man much to begin with what with wiping out most of their culture and all) they take…and eat. Well only 3 of the 4, the one guy that was left though that maybe eating the Gods chicken was a bad idea so he didn’t have any.
Good for him. Yah when people ask why other countries don’t like America/Americans ….well now you know. We do stuff like that.

working for the weekend…

It’s friday….Yay! Though it’s only sort of exciting since I have to work tomorrow. Blah!

The week it self went fine. Court on Monday was fun as always. Had to testify in Queens with another chemist on a small, usually simple case. Was a little interesting because apparently we were the first chemists that the ADA ever had testify for her, so she didn’t really know what to ask about exactly what we did. Luckily with all the mock court stuff we did during training we were able to give her an idea of the usual stuff they ask in court and the major points that she should probably hit. The actual testimony went fine. I was on the stand for maybe 15 minutes or so and didn’t really get any surprise questions the defense (or ADA for that matter). They seemed mostly interested in chain of custody issues, the defense tried twice to object to admitting the drugs into evidence. The defense attorney was also oddly obsessed with how much force it would take to crush a rock of crack. Where he was trying to go with that I have no idea, it might be related to something else in the case that went on earlier but again not our problem either.

The rest of the week was just the usual stuff, nothing overly exciting. I did finally get the vacation pick list and was able to get my weeks to match up with Meg’s college breaks and stuff so that was nice. As I said before I have to work tomorrow, but then tomorrow night I am going to a holiday party that a girl I work with is throwing so that should be interesting (seeing work people in a non work setting :) )

Next week the plan is to take Tuesday off and try and do all my Christmas shopping in one fell swoop. I already ordered some stuff off of amazon and will go into the city to try and find the rest.

Wish me luck!

Little update…

Categories: Personal, Work.

The weekend at last! I guess I should start off by mentioning for those who may not of noticed yet that I took off the password’s from the one or two posts I had protected. I had a chance to talk to my Mgr. on Friday afternoon and it turns out that he never had any problem with the posts, and was more wondering about the situation in general. The whole thing was just a bit of a communication mix up but all is well now so there really isn’t any need for the password stuff anymore. Which is good because I didn’t really like having them there. I really think that passworded or “Friends only” on line journals are utterly pointless, more so then the usual open on line journals that is :) . Either you want anyone to see it or don’t put it on line…well thats my 2 cents anyway.

Anyway….today was quite productive in a boring way. My kitchen got a MUCH needed cleaning. Floor, fridge, microwave, cabinets, and table. The whole room looks so much better now, I really ought not to wait until it gets to be unbearably messy before I clean in there. But now all is well and clean, and I hope I can keep it that way, for a while at least. Other then the massive cleaning didn’t really do much. Tomorrow is the usual shopping/laundry stuff, and maybe a trip to see if I can find some cheap paint, I am bored with white chairs in the kitchen. I am thinking a dark blue of some sort. Then Monday I am due in court (as a witness not suspect ;) ) which is always an interesting experience, our legal system at work. So stay tuned…

training…

Work was fun today. Got to do Polarimeter training today with the new trainees. Since I helped do the instrument validation I had the most experience using the instrument (given that I ran 50 or so samples to get it up and running). Whole thing went well, was fun in a way to teach though wouldn’t ever want to do it long term (as in be a teacher). Still was interesting and broke up the day which is always nice. Just tomorrow then weekend.

No idea what if anything will be going on but will be nice to relax. I supposed I ought to seriously try and work out holiday gifts and such for friends and family but I am having a hard time getting in the mood this year. We shall see…
