The Girl will be here again tomorrow! W00T! That also means I have another week of vacation next week. Double W00T! for the girl and vacation. Today was a bit crazy at work, having to finish up some stuff before my week off but then I get a call sending me to court. Whee. Was quick though, only on the stand for 10 minutes.
Anyway it’s Dr. Who time so thats it for now. No major plans this week while the girl is here, just relaxing and doing NY stuff!
Skipping a day… »« Happy Birthday Meg!
Today I had my first two supervised cases as part of my trace evidence training. First case was bloody clothing and a baseball cap from a homicide, the second was a metal baseball bat used in an assault. Was really different then the drug cases I am used to getting. Wasn’t a whole lot trace evidence to find on these particular items, but I did my processing and wrote up my part of the cases and passed them along to my trainer for further processing. Did I mention that the clothing was REALLY bloody? It didn’t actually even phase me which may of been a good thing, or mean that I’m a psychopath…or both I suppose.
Happy Birthday Meg! »« The great trashcan wars of ’06 – Part 1
First a little background. In the lab we have metal trashcans with tops that sort of swing in-and-out so you can put stuff into them. Being metal they get stuck some times, or in my case I am apt to catch my fingers in the lid when it swings back. Because of this when I am at my desk working I find it easier to just take the top off and throw trash directly into the can, replacing the top later when I am done. We also have janitorial staff of people who’s job it is to empty said trashcans on a daily basis as well as clean other stuff around the lab.
Still with me? Ok good!
Well it seems that one of the janitor ladies, who I will call CJL (crazy janitor lady) for now, has a problem bordering on clinical, with trashcans that are lacking their lids. This past Monday she proceeded to yell at me for said lid being missing with such gems as “you not aloud to take lid off†and “you work up here you should know the rule†(all in broken English mind you.) All I can do is stare back at her puzzled, seems I missed the memo on the proper function and use of trashcans. Now at my end of the room there is a can at the end of every row and one of the other ones near my co-workers desk had a stuck top so he tended to remove it as well (why I was the only one yelled at, at the time by CJL I don’t know).
Flash forward to today. I am sitting in the lunch room reading and my co-worker Mike comes in and asks “Do you know what happened to my trash can?†I reply a confused “No…why ask me?â€. Well seems that I got in a fight today with CJL that I knew NOTHING about. Was a pretty one sided fight it seems with just her and…well her. Another co-worker told me about it later, and how she was ranting for a good 5 minutes about the trash, and I guess me, in general (ignore for now how really unprofessional that is). Well while my trash can was still there when Mike returned to his desk his was gone. We aren’t sure why it’s gone now, maybe she just took it to be replaced or fixed, but we like to think it was just out of some crazy form of spite or to punish him for misuse of a trash can. I’m told that she was also ranting to one of the supervisors about some of the other rooms being dirty or something, which is odd coming from the cleaning staff who’s job it is to clean but that’s neither hear nor there.
So there you have it. The opening voiles of the great trash war of ’06. Who can say if this is just the first in what will be a long drawn out battle that will usher in an age of darkness across the land, but rest assured gentle readers, I will valiantly keep reporting for as long as I am able so that my story may get out and be a warning to others, that they may avoid my sad fate!
In closing all I can say yet again is “Now there’s something you won’t ever see on CSI!â€
Trace Cases… »« W00T!
We did our first day of observing the trace evidence processing work that we are in training for. Sounds more exciting then it actually was. Basically it involves us first observing the trace analysts at work, watching how they record the case, work with the evidence, and actually process the case collecting the relevant evidence. Was quite interesting actually, unlike controlled substances cases knowing the details behind a case can greatly effect how you approach it. Where as with drug evidence you get it and test it. I don’t really need to know where the crack pipe was or who they got it from. All in all was quite an interesting day. Well except for the co-worker who drove me nuts. Long story short something happened that wasn’t anyones fault and he was completely apologetic and seemed almost afraid of offending anyone instead of finding out what was going on and why it happened.
Um for one, don’t apologize for me. If someone messed up (not on a case, more a scheduling issue) and they get in trouble because I’m asking questions as to what happened then so be it, wasn’t my fault and I wouldn’t be sorry. And then when the person says they were sorry don’t try and needlessly put the blame on us. Um no it wasn’t our fault, it was theirs. Sigh…ok co-worker rant over for now. Unless he does something tomorrow to piss me off which given his track record is a good bet.
Rest of the day was good though. Worked 8-4 because of the training so it was neat to be home so early for a change. At the subway station there were all these cops and people. Seems some little kid got their foot stuck under the bars of one of those tall cage-like turnstiles. Ouch! I assume they eventually got the kid loose. See if he’s still there tomorrow I guess
Tonight I watched Donnie Darko which I got from Netflix. Always herd all this stuff about the movie but never saw it. All I can say is damn! Was weird and psychologically scary at the same time and it had time travel…sort of. I may have to watch it again before I send it back with commentary on or something.
It was really good.
W00T! »« I’m a geek but we all knew that already
It’s dark, grey, and rainy out today. So in principle not too bad a day to have to be inside all day working I suppose, it just makes it hard not to fall asleep at my desk and land face first in my spot plate.
Because I am a geek and listen to geeky podcasts I got inspired by Security Now this week (which was part of their continuing series on encryption) and managed to install GnuPG on my ibook and get it working with thunder bird. For the 99% of those that don’t know what the hell I’m talking about it lets me play spy and encrypt mail and files and sent them back and forth with other geeky people. I will probably never use it but it’s just fun to have! Here’s my public key by the way for those that care. But yah will need some form of PGP or GnuPG to use it.
Talked to teh_girl finally today and right now it seems like come May she will come up here to visit again instead of me going to FL like we had originally planned. This is mostly because it’s cheaper for her to come here since I have my own place, VS. having to get a hotel room for the week down there. Plus there was a bunch of stuff we never got to do when she was here last month so it should be fun.
Thanks to the wonders of Netflix tonight is a Kill Bill double feature with both parts 1 and 2 in the same night. I have simple needs, a night of sword fights and hacked off limbs and I am happy!
Assorted weirdness… »« April?
So yesterday was so nice that I decided to grab my trusty digital camera and go for a little walk. As usual I decided to check out yet another one of the local cemetery’s, this one is sort of at the top of my street and past the train tracks. It’s really huge but lacking for much worth photographing, I got a few nice shots but the other one I usually go to has much more interesting monuments. What did make the trip worth it though was that on my walk though the place I see a sign on the top of a building in the distance for “Super K mart†so I walk all the way to the other side of the place until I hit the road and find that not only is there a super K-mart but also a small mall place, both all of 20 minutes from my appt. I’ve lived here 2 years and had no idea. Granted K-mart isn’t usually the type of place I would get excited over but it’s close and useful in a pinch for house items and the like.
Today was back to work after the usual much too short weekend. What made today interesting though was that I found out that I was going to start training this week to learn how to process evidence in homicide cases. Basically will involve looking at the evidence, recognizing what is important and making sure it gets to the right section. It should be really interesting and a nice little semi-break from drugs (I say semi because I will still be doing drug cases while I train and even after I am done, this is just a part time project/assignment.)
