How unfair can it be! I have court tomorrow, on Halloween but I STILL can’t wear a costume! Ah well their loss I suppose. But yes I do have court tomorrow. Whee! Today I was down in Trace processing a case, and had an interview for a possible spot to train in the explosives section (double woo if I get that).
Meg’s mom helped Meg get into the halloween spirit by sending her a nice big care package of candy and other halloween treats, mmm…AND they sent me a little gift of a Starbucks gift card (which works out perfect seeing as there is one right near the court in Manhattan).
This weekend was nice and low key, we took it easy Saturday, and Sunday was the usual shopping laundry day. The big excitement was going to Kmart to get a new vacuum. Whee!
Well almost time for Heros, which is one of my favorite new shows this season. We already watched episode three of Torchwood tonight which is the new Dr. Who spinoff series. In theory its only on in England right now but, well you know with the internet and all that’s sorta meaningless.
Ahh what a age we live in, where from my appt. in Queens I can steal and watch nerdy SciFi tv shows from England.
Life Imitates Dilbert »« The horror that is Johnny Rockets
So yesterday we decided to go down and check out the new little shopping area at Atlas Park here in Glendale. The area used to be unused/abandoned wear-houses beside the train tracks. Now is is a good size retail park with upscale shops, food, and a movie theater (both Meg and I are most interested in the still coming soon Boarders Books they are building). Anyway we wandered around a bit, but most of the stores, like I said, are more upscale (for us) clothing stores. We went into the calendar store and walked around the area (they had pony rides for the little kids 12 and under so Meg was out of luck).
Well the main purpose of the visit was to go to the theater to see “The Prestige” which is the OTHER movie about turn of the century magicians (we saw “The Illusionist” last week). The theater is nice, it only opened back in May so everything is still new and shiny. Movie it self was alright, the visuals were good but the plot/story was a tad confusing because they were doing a flashback in a flashback and they really didn’t make it clear what story/time period they were in. Still it was fun, and worth the ticket price.
After the movie we decided to get some early dinner out. Right now the only two food places open around there are “California Pizza Kitchen” and “Johnny Rockets”. Well neither of us were really in a gourmet pizza mood so we though we’d try Johnny Rockets. Um…Oops. Now don’t get me wrong, I like pseudo-50′s-kitsch as much as the next person but this was just a bit too much. I mean it’s like they were trying WAY too hard to be “50′s” yet at the same time everything was brand new and shiny. And not like 50′s chrome shiny but just, well new shiny. The food it self was alright, cost a lot for what you got but that’s more NYC then anything else. But what made it a truly horrifying experience was when the music got turned up loud and the entire staff (which as far as I could tell was made up of 14-16 year olds) would sing/dance to musical numbers (“Staying Alive” is from the 50′s?). I mean I guess they were trying for cute dining experience but it was really more annoying then anything. Plus one came just as they were supposed to be getting us our check so we had to sit there and wait though a musical number before we could even pay. Do they do this at all the restaurants or is this something special to the Queens, NY one?
Needless to say next time I think we will be trying the pizza kitchen.
too bad I can’t go to court in costume… »« uh oh…
Well we are back in NYC. Got back last night with a car full of clean laundry, groceries, and apples. We had a really fun weekend doing as many stereotypical “fall time in New England” stuff as we could. This included going to see the leaves, getting a pumpkin, going apple picking, and having a fire in the fire place back at my house. I just put up a batch of pictures on the my pictures page but this one has to be one of my favorites:
“This is an apple?!?”
Sadly it was back to work today, though today was my first official day of 8-4 so W00T for that! Slightly less W00T was that my name was on the “special” list of people who are being given 7 cases a day instead of the normal 5 because its been a tad busy lately and they want to try and get through some of the backlog. It’s not so bad because they were all small/easy cases so I had no problems.
I do have to say I love my new desk, its nice and quiet and getting home at 4:30 pm can’t be beat!

Meg and I are still in CT with my family. We have had a lot of fun this weekend, got to see leaves, pick some apples, do a little shopping, and Meg had a mighty fun time playing with my parents new dog Finn. We have a lot to do today before we head back to NYC but I though id post a quick cute picture of the two of us from the top of Mt. Holyoke.
weekend wrap up… »« Four day weekend…
No work for me today! Decided to volunteer to work Columbus day (for time and a half plus seven hours of time) and took this Friday and Monday off for a nice long weekend. The girl and I will be going up to CT today and staying with my family. Meg wants to see the autumn leaves, so we will do a trip up to MA for a little sight seeing and maybe some shopping up in Northampton. I am sure Meg will also end up spending half the time playing with the dog, I just hope at the end of the weekend I can get her to come back home to NY with out it.
Work has been semi-busy this last week. The real news is that I finally got my tour change so when I get back to work on Tuesday I will have a new supervisor (yay!) and be working 8-4 instead of 10-6. Yeah it will suck to have to get up early everyday but getting home earlier will make up for it.
