Surreal Moment of the day…

Now living in NYC it’s not that odd to be walking at 9 on a Sunday morning and to see a car (driven by a bald, middle age, white guy) cruising down the street with his windows down and radio blasting…except that in this case he happens to be blasting Melissa Etheridge’s “Come to my window”.

Just sort of makes you stop and go huh?

Radio on TV…

The first episode of the This American Life tv show can be seen here for free (for now at least). It does a surprisingly good job of taking everything thats great about the radio show and translating it to the TV. Pity I don’t have showtime to catch future episodes, but then again that’s what bittorrent is for :)

But anyway…it’s only 30 min and worth checking out.

New Futon…

We went down to Ikea today in Long Island and got us a new Futon:

Futon-1

It’s purple and dead sexy! :) We also got Meg a new night stand for the bedroom, so we can have some drawers for some of her writing stuff.

While there we also hit the movies and saw Zodiac. It was long but really good, we both enjoyed it. After we got some lunch and went back to Ikea to buy our stuff, some how managed to stuff it in Megs car, and got it home. Then I got to spend a fun evening putting it all together. But as you can see I was successful! Yay! Also means Jenn and her boy have a place to sleep when they come visit in a few weeks.

Tomorrow it’s back to work, these short weekends suck!

Lousy smarch weather!

Meg was quite amazed that we could get snow up here in March. Well, welcome to New England. Back in FL it’s been in the 80’s I am told, and after months of “wanting to see snow” she is now done with the snow and wants it to go away. As do we all.

Yesterday, I left work at two and trudged though the snow and falling ice to the ever lovely DMV. Figured it was about time I got rid of my CT license, seeing as I have been living in NYC for a good three years now. My hope was that the fact that it was mid-afternoon on a Friday in the middle of a Snow/Hail storm would keep people away and the place wouldn’t be too crowded.

Yes, I was that naive.

Years of working at the movie theater should have taught me that people will go out to do the most idiotic things in the worst weather (in my defense the DMV is all of a 10 minute walk from where I work so seeing as I was out already it made sense for me to still go). All in all though I guess it went about as well as I could have expected. I waited in one line and because I actually had all my paperwork already filled out and ready to go (which slightly surprised the woman at the counter) was told I got the privilege of going to wait in that other line which was blessedly short. I got up there, got to hear the guy in front of my curse at the counter woman and storm off in a huff. She took my picture, checked my 87 forms of ID, which got me excited thinking that this was going to be nice and fast, that I would sign a form or two and get my temporarily license and could go merrily on my way.

Silly me! Instead what I got was a ticket with a number that let me go sit on the benches an wait for my number to be called. Joy! Because you know nothing is better then sitting around with my fellow New Yorkers in the DMV waiting room (or as some of the parents must of though of it a playground for their kids to run wild and free in while they waited). When my number finally did get called after only 30 minutes or so the rest of the process went fine. I read some letter off the eye chart, signed some stuff, checked off the “gut me for spare parts box, paid my money and was on my way back into the snow. Total time was only about an hour which for the DMV is damn near amazing, so I can’t complain too much. Now I can look forward to repeating the process in a few weeks when I deal with the registration. Joy!

Today, I have to work and then were going hit the grocery store (I’m making Meg do laundry while I’m at the lab) so our Sunday is free for an epic trip to Ikea to hunt down the rare Swedish futon. I just hope I can drag Meg out of there before we stuff her car full of “cute stuff” for the apartment. Last time she spent an hour just in the bedding section after deciding we NEEDED new bed sheets! But we plan to go early and make a day of it so as long as I keep my credit card safe it should be ok.
