We are back in NYC. While we were in CT I made one last on-line check for our passports before we had to go spend 50$ to get a rush copy of Megs Birth Certificate and low and behold the online site claimed they were delivered Friday. Still I wasn’t 100% relaxed on the matter till we got home today and I could hold them in my hands. So yay! We have passports for the cruise/wedding, which is next week. Last year I was really excited because it was a surprise cruise for Meg and our first cruise ever. This year, yeah I know what to expect and am still looking forward to a nice cruise vacation and all, but am much more low key about it all. One nice part is that because this is part of her sisters wedding and all we have had to do like nothing to get ready. Her family has made all the arrangements, booked tickets, flights, and hotel rooms, all we have to do is show up and look pretty. :)

Rainy days…

So the girl and I are in CT. We took the train up to New Haven Wednesday after work and my parents picked us up at the station. We are dog sitting for them this weekend while they are at their music festival. Meg as you can imagine is elated to have dogs to play with.

Thursday we just did some shopping (I needed sandals for the wedding/curise in 2 weeks) and a few other odds and ends. Then we went to see the Harry Potter movie which was eh. It was free so we couldn’t complain too much. Friday, we went down to the book barn which is always a fun trip and then that afternoon went to see The Simpsons movie, which was awesome. I was a tad worried about how it would be given that the last few seasons have been mediocre at best but the movie was hilarious! Definitely worth seeing! Today we drove up to Mass and hit Northampton but didn’t do much because it was pouring the whole time we were there, so after Thornes we drove down to the mall and spent a few hours there just walking around and shopping. Not exactly exciting but a nice afternoon.

We have 2 more days here in CT. Family is due back from their fest tomorrow and then we head back to NYC Monday. But we will only be there a week or so because next tuesday we fly down to FL for Meg’s sisters wedding/cruise (though we still don’t have passports so that is worrisome) but we should manage to work it all out and still have a nice time.

Famous Poems Rewritten as Limericks

One of my favorites is:

The Raven

There once was a girl named Lenore
And a bird and a bust and a door
And a guy with depression
And a whole lot of questions
And the bird always says “Nevermore.”

EDIT: The folks over at metafilter have taken the few ones posted on the site above and run with the concept, at over 200 comments by 6:30pm (I even threw one together and posted it based on The Cremation of Sam McGee)

A man by the name of McGee
Came south from old tennessee
A hunting for gold
he always was cold
when cremated he said let me be

Then and Now

So a few months ago I found an old wooden box on the curb of our street. The box it self caught my eye but what made me end up taking it home was that it was full of hundreds of photographic slides from the 1950′s (mostly 51 and 52). From what I could tell from looking and the little hand written list the were a mix of someone’s family events (weddings, Christmases, anniversaries) and tourist/vacation stuff (Niagara Falls, Vermont, Florida, and even Cuba). I wanted to try and scan some of the more interesting ones in because I have a thing for old cheesy tourist stuff (and it didn’t get more cheesy in my opinion then 50′s touristy stuff). I finally found a scanner than can do slides so I am slowly digitizing some of the better ones and will probably put them up on line at some point (possibly on some free hosting site like flickr, though if I get ambitious I might self host them too). Also included in the first set I have looked through were a few shots of a parade here in Glendale, NY. One was going down Myrtle ave and to my amazement the Wolf Jewelry store sign is visible in the picture, which is the very same sign they still have outside the shop today. There also was a picture of a group of boy scouts marching down Central ave going right past our Street.

So being the huge geek that I am I took out my camera and tried to take the same pictures from near the same spots as they exist today.

Myrtle Ave 1951 and 2007:

Myrtle1951 Myrtle2007

Central Ave 1951 and 2007:

69Th And Central 1951-1 69Th And Central 2007

I think its interesting to see the same places 56 years apart. I have a handful of other slides scanned so far but likely won’t put them up anywhere until I have a good sized set of them done which will take a while (while I have managed to get the scanner to go a bit faster by turning down the resolution a bit, there is no real way to automate the process so for now its load three slides into the scanner and scan each one, replace with the next three and repeat.) So if cheesy tourist photos from the 50′s sound interesting keep an eye out here for more information :)

On the way to go grocery shopping today we passed a sign for a yard sale. On the way home we stopped by to check it out. Turns out it was the same place we went a few weeks ago. I guess that the couple who run it either had an elderly relative who just died (a lot of the stuff dates from the 50-60′s) or they do this semi-professionally. I didn’t find anything this time, but Meg found a few pieces of costume jewelry and a few old buttons. One that we just couldn’t pass on was this one:

Valentine

Because nothing says “Happy Valentines Day” like the threat of physical violence!

Damned DMV

While I had been planing to do it for a while anyway, the fact that our license plate was stolen which make’s the car sorta useless for trips further then around the block, I went down to the DMV this week to try and get the car registered in NYC and get new plates.

Note my use of the word TRY.

Given that NYC is the huge city it is, with somewhere around 8 million people, the DMV is obviously only going to be open Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm. Because you know, no one is actually working then or anything.

So to start the situation is this. The car is Meg’s but the title was in her Mom’s name. So when we left FL last year her mom signed us over the title as part of a private sale using the whole “sold for 1$ trick”, at the time we put both mine and Megs name on the title which made sense given that it IS her car. So anyway I go on line, look up all the stuff I think I will need on the DMV’s website on transferring an out of state title and registering the vehicle in NY. I printed and filled out all the necessary forms, got the title, registration, and my insurance card, and went down to the DMV near work Tuesday morning, after telling work I would be an hour or two late that day (for which I have to use my own saved up time). Get there at 8 and wait in the already long line outside, get inside and wait in the inside line when the open at 8:30. When I finally get to the counter the DMV drone tells me that my insurance card is no good. I look at it and see that it doesn’t expire until Aug 11, which I say. He tells me that the card has to be issued no more then 45 days ago to be used for registration. Huh? So given no other options I go back to work defeated. Now my insurance CO HAD sent me a new set of cards for the next six month period Aug 11-Feb 11 but I didn’t take those because they don’t kick in till Aug 11 when the old ones expire. So I call the DMV phone number, wait on hold 20 minutes or so, and talk to a woman who said I should go back with both sets of cards which will show I have a full year of coverage. Mind you I called to be sure that I wouldn’t have any problems this time. (I bet you can see where this is going already)

So today I go back, again in line at 8, go in at 8:30, get to the counter. This time the woman working looks at my paperwork and tells me “this one card isn’t valid and the other one doesn’t go into effect until Aug 11, you need a card issued with in 45 days”. Trying my best not to scream and kick the drivers license photo camera across the room I explain to her that I had called the DMV and was told by their own people that this was the correct thing to do. Her response was “I don’t know why they would tell you that, thats wrong”. Still trying not to flip out at this point I ask her how exactly she recommends I go about getting my car legally registered in NY because apparently actually having proof of a full years worth of car insurance (which probably puts me in a minority of car driving New Yorkers) is for some reason not good enough. She says I can call my insurance company and get a card with todays date on it faxed to me at the fax machine they have at the coffee stand in the lobby (2$ a page) and could come back with out waiting in line again. I thanked her, went, called geico who was helpful and got the card faxed with todays date on it. Went back, she looked at it and gave me my number that let me go wait on the benches for yet another clerk to help me.

Amazingly enough my wait is only 10 minutes or so. I go up with all my paperwork and she looks over it. This is where the second problem comes in. Because Meg’s name is hand written in pen on the title she not only has to sign the title but also will have to fill out all the same forms as me and come in to the DMV with me, bringing 6 points worth of ID (her FL divers license which is like the only form of ID that she has it only worth 2 points). Say a birth certificate would work but the passport people still have that (a passport is actually worth 4 points but again don’t have those yet, which is a problem in it self given we have a cruise/wedding in a month but one issue at a time).

So right now we have a car with no license plate other then a piece of paper in the back window with the old plate number and indicating that the plate was stolen (which was reported) But not having a real plate means that the car is really sort of useless for drives longer then a few blocks. We were going to drive up to CT in 2 weeks so Meg could dog sit for my mom but now we will have to take the train or something because driving the car from NY to CT sans plates is not likely the best of ideas. In a word we are stuck. Can’t register the car with out more ID or a new title from FL, can’t really fly down to FL to get some temp tags for the time being (though I may end up seeing if her mother can do that for us just for now so the stupid car is drivable.) I worry that even if we get Meg the ID she needs and stuff they will say “now where is HER insurance card” or take issue that she doesn’t have a NY license or that it is a full moon out.

The whole thing has been such a mess I would of just left the damn car registered in FL but in order to get a parking pass at work the car has to be in my name. Though being able to drive into work on the weekends really doesn’t seem to be the great motivator it once was.

Tonight the girl and I went down to Forest Park for the free concert of Irish music. They had Andy Cooney performing and he was a lot of fun. I mean no huge surprises in his set, Danny Boy was played as expected. But we had a good time. We went down, herd music, had some food. It was a really nice night. Next week they have Jerry Cardone performing who apparently does a music tribute to Frank Sinatra. We are SO going.

Gave Library Thing a look today (so ok, Meg tried to tell me about it before) and it’s pretty cool. As someone who has more books then space, I have always toyed with the idea of doing some database or spreadsheet to catalog them but never bothered because of a lack of time and I knew I would never keep it updated. What makes Library Thing cool not just the catalog but also the social aspects of recommending other books or showing you other users who have the same ones as you.

This is my profile on the site I only have about 4 shelfs of books entered so far but thats almost 100 books just in the time after I got home from work. You only get 200 books under the free acct. but a lifetime acct. is cheap and I may go for it if I am still into this after another 100 or so books.

I feel safer already

From this news story : “In one test, TSA inspectors hid the components of a fake bomb in carry-on luggage that also contained a bottle of water.”…”The screeners at Albany International confiscated the water bottle but missed the bomb. In all, the inspectors slipped four banned items through the main checkpoint during the test, sources said.”

Wow….thats all you can really say I guess. I mean…its a good thing they found that water. See the terrorist might of been thinking of assembling his bomb on the plane, but that would doubtless make one quite thirsty (bomb assembly is hard work) and with out a bottle of water to drink…well its really just not worth the effort!

Sigh.

They are robots…but in disguise!

This past weekend was nice and relaxed. Since it was a bit warm Saturday and only supposed to get warmer the next few days we put the AC back in. This time we tried an experiment and put it in the living room instead of the bedroom. It is working surprisingly well. We are keeping the bedroom and bathroom doors closed and I tacked a tarp up to try and close off the kitchen. The tarp actually really surprised me at how well it’s working to keep the cold in the living room. For a thin piece of plastic as a barrier, the kitchen is a good 10-15 degrees warmer then living room so it must be doing something.

Saturday we also went out to the movies again. This time we jumped on the band wagon and saw “Transformers”. I though it was good, for a mindless summer action movie. It also had more product placement shots then any other movie I have ever seen but these days what do you expect.

Back at work today, weekends are never long enough. Really have to try and go to the DMV this week I suppose, which I am dreading, because it’s such a fun experience. Oh well. Maybe I will get lucky and I will get in and out of there in under 2 or 3 hours (he says while knocking on wood and crossing his fingers).

Killer Bunnies

Tonight the girl and I finally got to play the game I ordered from amazon Killer Bunnies. It’s a card based game where you try and collect carrots while keeping your bunnies alive from your opponents weapons and other random misfortunes. They were always talking about it on the podcasts Slice of Scifi and Winging It so I though I would check it out.

It was a lot of fun, even if Meg did kick my ass royally in it! We had a good time, and she took much glee in killing off my poor bunnies one by one.
