So it seems that the someone who stole our old license plate is still using it. Meg’s mother got a ticket from NYC mailed to her down in FL. She called today and I went on line to look it up and there are 6 unpaid tickets so far totaling over 500$. Which is funny given the hassle I had to go through to report the plates stolen, got a police report and everything. But seems that while at the time that was enough now it’s not and I have to call the parking people and maybe the DMV to tell them what I guess they cops didn’t bother: that the plates were stolen at the end of June so tickets from August and September aren’t our problem anymore. Whee! Because you know how much I love dealing with the city govt.
Sigh. Funny thing is that the perps who took the plate don’t live too far away it seems and are using it on a black or green Acura. Given that 5 of the 6 tickets were issued around 358, 359, and 362 Bainbridge St in Brooklyn one could also assume that is where said perp lives. Now you would think that the parking people’s system might tell them that…hey this plate is stolen maybe we should just tow the damn car but I guess not. Am almost tempted to drive by there to see if the car/plate is still on the street and then calling the cops to report I have found my stolen property but doing so would probably get me shot or something knowing my luck still it would be funny.
So Monday I get to call the parking folk and see what they have to say on the matter. I already downloaded PDF’s of all the tickets and information pages from the city’s website and have copies of the complaint report I filed, and will put together packets for the police, parking bureau, and who ever else they say might want the info. I can already tell this is just going to be oodles of fun!
On the plus side the hazard flasher switch I ordered for the car from ebay came today and works great. It will be novel having hazards that you can actually turn off! Now I am just waiting on the tail lights, I can only hope they are just as easy to replace.
Wedding weekend »« Another great plate
Well it took four trips but I finally was able to get Meg’s car registered here in NYC. I ended up taking Friday off and went back to the DMV yet again first thing. This time I brought the picture of the VIN number so they could verify it was correct. I almost snapped when the clerk asked “who told you you could bring a picture? it’s supposed to be a tracing”. But he went and asked someone else and came back and kept processing my paperwork. Finally he handed me my new license plates and registration sticker! I still have to get the car inspected, and I will have to fix the stupid tail light before I do that but the major hurdles are over.
For the rest of my Friday off I met Val in the city and went with her to see the people from Rent doing a few songs at J&R music in Manhattan. We then just sort of walked around the city and she tried to get tickets to actually see Rent by doing the ticket lottery. Even though she didn’t win she still ended up buying her self one half price ticket to see it anyway. I passed, not really wanting to see Rent or wanting to stay out that late and have to make my way home at like midnight. Still it was nice to see her and to get to hang out for a few hours.
Saturday for the girl and I was low key. I ran out in the morning to the little auto parts store here off of Myrtle to get the stuff I needed to mount our new license plates and then later we actually got to use the car (yay!) and ran up to K-mart for the exciting trip of buying a new kitchen trash can. Ohhhh! What a wild and crazy live we live.
This afternoon we walked down to the Myrtle ave street fair and checked out the little vendors they have and got a bunch of really not good for us food (corndog, funnel cake, and fried oreo) Mmmmm. Good thing they only do the fair like once a year or so.
Another great plate »« My journey to the island
So today I finally got to experience the splendor and wonder that is Staten Island. Some how in the 3.5 years I have lived in NYC I just never seemed to make it out there, until today. Court decided my presence was needed today so I got to head on over there. Thing is from Queens the trip to Staten Island, is a good 3 hour trip (Subway to Subway to Ferry to Buss to walk 2 blocks). I do have to say at least I had good weather for the trip and the ferry ride was nice. I told Meg we will have to go some time just for fun, not to actually do anything on Staten Island mind you, just to ride the ferry and back.
Tomorrow I get to make my 4th (and God willing final) attempt at the DMV. I went this past Tuesday and got as far as them typing stuff into the computer, which is more then I ever got before. This time the FL title was missing a digit in the middle of the VIN number so I have to come back with a photograph of the physical VIN plate on the dash. I am bring a 8.5X11 print which should be sufficient. Ideally I will actually get the car registered this time and get some license plates so I can, you know, drive it around again. Then I have to face getting the damn thing inspected which I am sure will go as poorly as the DMV visits have, but I will face that hurdle if/when I get to it. Stupid car!
On the plus side I also have tomorrow off and will be meeting up with Val after the DMV. Some thing with the people from the cast of Rent are gona be at some music store in the city and she is crazy to go and didn’t have anyone with go with. It also helps that the place is all of 2 blocks from the Manhattan court area which I know quite well from all my visits to testify so I will make a decent guide. We will likely meet up with Meg after she gets out of work and all do dinner or something together (assuming the poor girl is feeling better, she has some form of a head cold or something but managed to drag her self into work today never the less).
Ok bed time. Looks to be a busy day tomorrow!
I can drive again…yay! »« Manhattan 1600 vs. 2007
Tonight after work I had the girl meet me in the city and we went to the Barnes and Noble at Union Square to see Alan Alda who was giving a talk and signing his new book. We never take advantage of stuff like this which is silly seeing as it’s all of a 30 minute subway ride away.
He was very funny and talked mostly about stuff from his life (which I guess is what his new book is about, but in a funny way) He is a great speaker. I have always liked him from Scientific American Frontiers on PBS (I watched and enjoyed that before I was old enough to appreciate M*A*S*H)
After we didn’t stick around for the book signing, mostly because we were both starving, so we went and got us some dinner at Heartland (its Pumpkin Ale season…mmmm).
We both agreed we have to try and do stuff like this more often, it was a really fun night.

Had today off of work which was nice! Just took it easy and went out for a little walk/photo taking at the cemetery. Meg went into the city for meet a friend for lunch and pick her brain as to what she though of Megs novel.
Speaking of Meg the big news is that she found a job! She went for an interview this past Thursday and then Friday afternoon I get an excited call from her saying the called to offer her the job. It’s actually a paid internship with a publishing company in the city, which in theory, lasts for 6 months after which they can hire her on full time. Needless to say she is very excited. She starts next Monday, so yesterday we went a shopping to get her some now needed work cloths.
It will be strange getting home and having Meg be at work. We have gotten spoiled with her always being here when I get home from work for a year. I guess I will have to go back to making dinner all the time, it was a nice little treat while I had it. Sigh.
