Lizzie Borden took an axe…

I took last Friday and Monday off this past weekend and decided to turn it into a little mini-vacation. What with the wedding and all coming so soon, I wont get to take a full vacation before then so a few long weekends will have to do.

Meg and I went up to visit my parents in CT. They were planning a party/bbq for my brother who is back after living down in VA for a few years. He is starting grad school in the fall so we figured a little celebration was in order. The party was on Saturday and went about as you would expect with too much food and booze hehe.

On Friday though, Meg and I decided to do a little day trip up to Fall River,MA. Fall River is home to Battle Ship cove where you can go and tour old WWII era battleships and other ships (And a submarine). We had fun walking all around and though the old ships. We were really able to get a feel for what life there must have been like after seeing the cramped hallways and quarters. After that we went to check out the OTHER thing Fall River has going for it and that is Lizzie Borden. (For those who done know she supposedly killed her father and step-mother with an axe back in 1892. At the time it was “the trial of the century” and she ended up being found not guilty, to this day there are people who argue both sides as to if she really did it or not). ANYWAY…we went to visit the Fall River Historical Society house which has a exhibit of Lizzie Borden artifacts including the actual axe head along with some microscope slides of hair and blood that were used at the trial. The rest of the house that the Historical Society was housed in was interesting to tour also. Our tour guide was slightly….eccentric but fun and Meg amazed him at her obscure knowledge of 1890’s life and facts from the Borden case. The only downside of the trip was that we couldn’t find any place to eat there in Fall River. We asked a few people for a decent place to get some lunch and were offered McDonalds or Subway. Uh…needless to say we passed and got some snacks to hold us over for the ride home. Ended up stopping for Indian food at the place we both really like in West Hartford.

Sunday was pretty laid back, ended up doing our usual Book Barn run and as usual sold back a bunch of books and then turned right around and replaced them with more.

Got back to NY on Monday morning. Meg’s new glasses finally arrived. We ended up ordering them from zennioptical.com which is a discount site Jenn told us about. Glasses there are DIRT cheap but still of decent quality. Meg ended up getting two pairs, a “normal” pair and a fun pink pair with sparkles. Total for the two pairs of glasses and shipping was something like 37$. Given most all the glasses at lenscrafters were in the 200-300$ range I would say that’s a good deal.

This week we are probably going to order out wedding rings and SERIOUSLY look into flights and hotels for October. Wedding is in 2.5 months. EEK!

Summer TV sucks. I am giving Warehouse 13 another episode or two, but seriously…LOST needs to come back already. Toying with netflixing the first few seasons to get my LOST/DHARMA fix till it comes back :)

Another post…shocking I know.

On the one hand I want to try and post here a bit more. On the other I have nothing much to post about so it will be sort of pointless. We will see how it goes.

Meg put together a box of books for our inevitable trip to The Book Barn when we head up to CT this weekend. I have a hard time parting with books. Even if it’s something I have read before if I think there is even a CHANCE I will want to read it again I will keep it. Meg is a little better but is a book keeper too. Hence the two of us together equals two full IKEA 5 shelf book cases, plus a smaller horizontal one, plus the headboard book case, plus…well various surfaces around the appt.

Now you would think visiting the used book store as often as we do would help this situation but its really more a vicious cycle…bring books to sell for credit, shop and use up said credit for more books, go home and read, bring back to the book barn….well you get the point.

Aside from the book barn we are pondering a trip to to Fall River,MA. Visit battleship cove and maybe the historical society museum and/or the Lizzy Borden house/museum. I am sure the Lizzy Borden house will be a cheesy tourist trap but the forensics nerd in me can’t pass up visiting the site of the “Crime of the Century” well for the 19th century at least. Also I have a thing for cheesy tourist attractions. See: Our engagement and our wedding location :)

Long day at work today. Stayed till 6 because I had a lot of stuff to finish. Haven’t stayed late in a week or two so I am so not used to it anymore. Which is funny because back when I worked in the drug section I would stay more nights than not till 6. Maybe I am just slowing down in my old age :)

On a unrelated note Meg sent out the invitations today so yay for that. One more thing we can take of the wedding “To Do” list.

Looks to be a lazy weekend. We got up, had breakfast, and then promptly went back to bed and snoozed another hour. Still just sort of being bums at the moment. Figure I will drag my self out in a little while for a walk down Myrtle or something to get out for at least a little bit. We though about doing something more involved but seeing as we are heading to CT Thursday for a long weekend (taking Friday and Monday off) I would rather save our money for CT and possible MA activities.
One the wedding front we have the invitations all filled out and ready to mail. Probably take them down to the PO Monday and send them on their way. Everything is really starting to come together, which is good since we have less than 4 months at this point.
Next on the agenda will be the wedding rings.
