Lizzie Borden took an axe…
I took last Friday and Monday off this past weekend and decided to turn it into a little mini-vacation. What with the wedding and all coming so soon, I wont get to take a full vacation before then so a few long weekends will have to do.
Meg and I went up to visit my parents in CT. They were planning a party/bbq for my brother who is back after living down in VA for a few years. He is starting grad school in the fall so we figured a little celebration was in order. The party was on Saturday and went about as you would expect with too much food and booze hehe.
On Friday though, Meg and I decided to do a little day trip up to Fall River,MA. Fall River is home to Battle Ship cove where you can go and tour old WWII era battleships and other ships (And a submarine). We had fun walking all around and though the old ships. We were really able to get a feel for what life there must have been like after seeing the cramped hallways and quarters. After that we went to check out the OTHER thing Fall River has going for it and that is Lizzie Borden. (For those who done know she supposedly killed her father and step-mother with an axe back in 1892. At the time it was “the trial of the century” and she ended up being found not guilty, to this day there are people who argue both sides as to if she really did it or not). ANYWAY…we went to visit the Fall River Historical Society house which has a exhibit of Lizzie Borden artifacts including the actual axe head along with some microscope slides of hair and blood that were used at the trial. The rest of the house that the Historical Society was housed in was interesting to tour also. Our tour guide was slightly….eccentric but fun and Meg amazed him at her obscure knowledge of 1890’s life and facts from the Borden case. The only downside of the trip was that we couldn’t find any place to eat there in Fall River. We asked a few people for a decent place to get some lunch and were offered McDonalds or Subway. Uh…needless to say we passed and got some snacks to hold us over for the ride home. Ended up stopping for Indian food at the place we both really like in West Hartford.
Sunday was pretty laid back, ended up doing our usual Book Barn run and as usual sold back a bunch of books and then turned right around and replaced them with more.
Got back to NY on Monday morning. Meg’s new glasses finally arrived. We ended up ordering them from zennioptical.com which is a discount site Jenn told us about. Glasses there are DIRT cheap but still of decent quality. Meg ended up getting two pairs, a “normal” pair and a fun pink pair with sparkles. Total for the two pairs of glasses and shipping was something like 37$. Given most all the glasses at lenscrafters were in the 200-300$ range I would say that’s a good deal.
This week we are probably going to order out wedding rings and SERIOUSLY look into flights and hotels for October. Wedding is in 2.5 months. EEK!
